Chart of Trains from the US and Canada since February 1

RailState, the industry’s only provider of rail network intelligence independently monitors cross-border train movements in real-time. 

With tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico set to start on March 4, we’re monitoring the impacts to the rail supply chain as they happen. 

Train Volumes

Canada – US

Train volumes from Canada across all border crossings dipped on March 1 to 14% below the 30-day average. 

Northbound volumes from the US on March 1 were down 9% from the average. 

Mexico – US

Train volume from the US into Mexico was 4% below the 30-day average on March 1. 

Northbound train volumes from Mexico to the US were also down slightly (-5%).

Autoracks

Canada – US

Autorack volumes from Canada fell 27% from the 30-day average after a brief surge from 2/26-2.28.

Volumes into Canada from the US also decreased, dropping 6%.

Mexico – US

Autoracks from the US into Mexico jumped on March 1, to 38% above the recent 30-day average.

Northbound autoracks from Mexico also grew, rising 5% over the recent average.
