Cross-Border Rail Volumes – March 4, 2025

With tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico going into effect today, we’re monitoring the impacts to the rail supply chain as they happen.
Train Volumes
Canada – US
On the last full day before the start of tariffs, train volumes from Canada across all border crossings were 13% higher than the 30-day average.
Northbound volumes from the US were exactly in line with the recent average volumes.
Mexico – US
Train volumes from the US into Mexico were 3% below the 30-day average.
Northbound train volumes from Mexico fell 13% below the recent averages.
Autoracks
Canada – US
The last two days saw high southbound volumes from Canada on March 2 followed by low volumes on March 3 that were 23% below the 30-day average.
Northbound volumes had the opposite trend. Low volumes on March 2 and high volumes on March 3, 28% above the 30-day average.
Mexico – US
Autoracks from the US into Mexico dropped on Mar 3, 31% below the recent 30-day average.
Northbound autoracks from Mexico jumped to some of the highest levels in the past thirty days, +44% above the recent average.
