Western Ports
Port of Vancouver
Total train volume westbound to the Port of Vancouver declined 4.0% in December compared to November. Sulphur unit trains increased the most, growing from 17 trains to 22 trains. The largest decrease came from Grain unit trains, which declined 19.2% last month.
CPKC took a larger share of volume in December, outpacing CN by 5.6%. This is a similar breakdown to November.
Prince Rupert
Freight volume to the Port of Prince Rupert increased 4.9% in December. Most growth came from manifest trains, which increased 42.1%. Coal unit train volume increased 14.3%, while Grain unit trains dropped 10% and Petroleum unit trains fell 11.4%.
Eastern Ports
Halifax
Train volume to Halifax fell 11.4% in December, mainly from a 14.3% decrease in Grain unit train traffic.
Port of Sydney
Train volume to the Port of Sydney decreased 16.1%, largely due to no Coal unit trains and a small decline in Manifest trains. In November, Port of Sydney saw 4 Coal unit trains, which was significantly higher than typical Coal volume to that port.
Thunder Bay
Train volume to Thunder Bay fell 17.6% in December. There were 10 fewer Grain unit trains last month compared to November, 7 fewer Potash trains, and 6 fewer Coal unit trains. The only train type to see an increase was Automotive trains, grew from 14 trains to 17 trains in December.
CPKC moved 72% of train volume to Thunder Bay in December. This is a small decrease from November, when they moved 74.3%.
