This report covers intermodal train and container movements on Union Pacific and BNSF railways in the southwest United States.
BNSF
In October, BNSF moved 172,599 containers eastbound, up from 153,698 in September, a 12.3% increase. This is the highest volume this year and has been driven by a recent surge in imports from Asia.
The overall BNSF system speeds for intermodal, as reported to the STB, ranged from 30.5mph to 30.8mph for October. Across the segment RailState covers (from Getz, AZ to Bovina, TX), average speeds ranged from 28.4mph to 28.9mph throughout October, with a moderate increase in speed in the last two weeks.
Union Pacific
Union Pacific moved 108,061 containers eastbound through southern California in October evenly split between international and domestic containers. This is the highest volume of containers so far this year. Container volume was up slightly (0.66%) from September.
The overall UP system speeds for intermodal, as reported to the STB, ranged from 28.7mph at the beginning of October to 29.1mph in the last week of the month. Across the segment RailState covers (from Mecca, CA to El Paso, TX), average speeds ranged from 25.3mph at the start of October and increased to 30.1mph in the past week.
